How to make dreadlocks

This is our PDA site- If you are using a computer you should check out our complete Dreadlocks Site with really helpful graphics

What you need:
This is a check list of stuff to get. If you decide to get the Supa Dupa Dread Kit don't worry about this section cause its all included. (Well everything but the clips and a friend or two)
1. Metal tooth dreading comb
You need a metal tooth comb that you can pull hard against and won't break. Normal plastic bristles will bend and break off before your dreadlocks are finished. The teeth don't need to be very long, they just need to be strong and close together. Our New dread combs have a really cool ruler on the handle which makes sectioning much easier. Now you don't have to switch between the ruler, the comb, and the rubberbands. Pretty nifty, huh?

2. Rubberbands
You could use normal rubberbands but these are so much better. These are small & black & hold up well through washings. They don't pull and break your hair like regular rubberbands do, and they are nice and small. We also offer poly bands in clear and black.

3. Hair Clips
Hair clips are used for holding hair back while your sectioning and backcombing.
Just about any clips will do as long as they can keep the hair out of your way.

4. A friend or 2 to help you out
The backcombing takes a little while; it's not that hard to do, but you should pick up a few movies or video games for the occasion, and make a party out of it.

5. DreadHead Dread Wax
This stuff is what makes it all work! It holds the hair together so your dreadlocks look better while they are locking up; & it forms tight smooth dreadlocks in less time. Of course we recommend our DreadHead Dread wax because it works faster, smells mmmmmmm better and gives your hair all the nutrients it needs to stay healthy and prevent breakage ( I know cuz I use it) .
: A big 7oz jar will last you 3 to 6 months! & now you can get extra Dread Wax with your dread kit for half price!

6. DreadHead Dread Soap/Shampoo
The Shampoo you use to wash your dreads in is every bit as important as the wax you choose. A good dread soap/shampoo leaves your hair completely clean. Sounds easy huh? All soaps & shampoos do that, right? Nope. The truth of the matter is, manufactures are more concerned with how their product smells, conditions, and moisturizes instead of how well it cleans. These smells, conditioners, and moisturizers leave residues behind. These residues are left to the benefit regular hair in various ways because some of these residues make hairs more manageable by helping it slip out of knots, others protect hair from uv rays and some just make it smell like peppermint or tea tree oil. Unfortunately, all these residues, natural or not, stay in your hair and have some really unfortunate side effects for dreadlocks. We will get back to that later in the residues section. For right now, all you need to know is that you should always only wash your dreadlocks with a residue free soap/shampoo.

TIP: A good test to see if a soap or shampoo is residue free. Wash your hands in it and smell them after they dry. Is there a scent? If you can smell the scent of the soap on your hands or if you can feel a silkiness, then the soap/shampoo is leaving residues behind and it's not good for your dreads.

7. DreadHead Locking Accelerator
The Locking Accelerator speeds up the locking process of your dreadlocks, generally taking at least a 2 months off the time it takes to get your dreadlocks tight and mature. The Locking Accelerator isn't a must, but it will make your dreadlocks happen faster. So if speed is an issue you'll love it. The Accelerator is also really helpful to use right before you backcomb to get the hair in the mood to knot up. The straighter and more..."Caucasian" your hair texture is, the bigger difference it will make. 1 bottle of the Locking Accelerator will last you through the backcombing process, and probably a month or so after unless you have long hair.

8. DreadHead Lock Peppa
We can't say Lock Peppa is a must either, but if we told you Lock Peppa wasn't necessary and then after backcombing 40 dreads without Lock Peppa, you backcombed one more using it, you would not only want to beat us down like a red-headed step child, you would probably think we were very bad people, and you may even lay awake at night wondering how we can live with ourselves knowing full-well how much needless frustration we could eliminate from peoples lives just by telling everyone they need to use Lock Peppa. This stuff really makes a big difference.
